Byzantium at Early Modern Courts

The present volume constitutes a compendium of papers from a conference held in Mainz in November of 2022. The objective of this volume is to examine the various dimensions of the presence of Byzantium at early modern courts. Therefore, the scope of the publication will extend to the treatment of Byzantine artifacts, the reception of Byzantium in the context of power, and the extant knowledge on Byzantium within the courtly milieu. The objective of this conference is to examine the competition for Byzantine heritage and to assess the extent to which attempts were made to revive and utilize it. Der vorliegende Band ist ein Kompendium der Beiträge einer Konferenz, die im November 2022 in Mainz stattfand. Das Ziel dieses Bandes ist es, die verschiedenen Dimensionen der Präsenz von Byzanz an frühneuzeitlichen Höfen zu untersuchen. Daher wird sich der Umfang der Publikation auf die Behandlung byzantinischer Artefakte, die Rezeption von Byzanz im Kontext der Macht und das vorhandene Wissen über Byzanz innerhalb des höfischen Milieus erstrecken. Ziel dieser Konferenz ist es, den Wettbewerb um das byzantinische Erbe zu untersuchen und zu beurteilen, inwieweit Versuche unternommen wurden, es wiederzubeleben und zu nutzen.
